But despite the peaceful anniversary, sectarianism is still present across the country and is believed to be on the increase, partly as a result of Brexit. Though safety procedures have improved since the 1980s, the mine remains in full operation, and produces 13% of the worlds asbestos. SAMA, the company who runs the asbestos mine, has privately settled over 3000 cases with former workers who developed cancers and other health conditions related to asbestos. The war was then reignited in 2020 by Azerbaijan, who launched an invasion and waged war for 45 days until Russia stepped in to broker peace. Azerbaijan managed to take back 70% of the land it ceded in the first war.
